Any suggestions for silent socket 775 cooling? Preferably a heatsink that screws down, as i HATE the pushpin style. It will be going in an HTPC, so nothing to huge, once i open up the case and mockup the motherbord i can take a pic and provide dimensions.

Currently I am using the Thermalright Ultra-120. It screws down and get's very tight. Though it is HUGE so I know that isn't what you want but....it screws down.

Hmmm that might be something to look into, how much bigger than the XP-90 is it? As space is a concern, as there is not alot of extra to work with in this case (Silverstone LC14M) I currently have an XP-90 in a silverstone LC16 and it is a TIGHT fit with a fan on it (mind you i retro fitted it with a 120mm fan...) Pretty much just looking for as quiet as i can get, so anything that will take a 120mm fan should be alright (assuming it will fit) i should really mock up a spare motherboard in this case and see exactly how much room i have to play with. How is the Ultra 120 Psychotic? Would it be comparable to my SI-120? |

Sorry for the late response. This thing is HUGE, how much bigger then the xp-90? LMAO!! damn dude...I have and still have the XP-90 on my old 939 DFI LanParty UT and if I stand it up next to the T.R Ultra? makes it look like midget. Seriously though;
The T.R Ultra 120 is 63.5 x 132 x 160.5mm and the XP-90 is 116 x 96 x 75mm . So as you can see the Ultra TOWERS over the 90 The SI 120 is; 135 x 125 x 90mm. ========================================= The T.R Ultra 120 made a nice and comfortable temp drop. I would say about 5-6c (see below), Maybe more cuz' I clocked right away after install. BTW...the install is kinda touchy. This thing is huge so taking XTRA precaution would be advisable. It may make your mobo bow a little but rest assured, when it's fully tightened down this thing won't move. Though it does and will twist effortlessly. When installing, make sure when you tighten it down to do it like you would when tightening lug nuts on a car or even a manifold. Perform a "X" technique. The first one you tighten down will be the most important one. Thread it down JUST ENOUGH so it makes good hold. No more, no less. Then do the same with the one DIAGNALLY from that first one you just did. Now this second one will be harder. Make sure you have a quality driver and your screw driver is DIRECTLY in-line with the screw and you have a firm tight hold on it. I used my other hand to help guide the screw into the back-plate. Press down hard and slow and you will have major resistance so you'll have to do this very carefully because if you don't? you may slip off the screw and gouge the shit outta your mobo. I am not even kidding here folks. I've read that this has happened numerous times to others so beware! Once you have all the screws in there perspective holes then you can tighten them fully down doing the same "X" shape technique. you can't screw in to much because of the back-plate. It's designed to have the proper seating. The current config. I have is 2-120 fans on the T.R Ulta 120. One on each side blowing in the same direction. This made the temp drop 4c MORE. PLUS if you were to lap the bitch? Damn. This 120 will definately satisfy you and your chip will say; "Ahhhh...thank you, that feels good" |
